Natural Generation
In the Overworld, stone generates only a couple of blocks below the surface in most biomes. It then carries on until the bottom of the world. Stone can be replaces by caves, ores, gravel veins, dungeons, the J block, and the bedrock borders spawned at the edges of the world.
Smelting
Stone is a renewable resource, as cobblestone, which can be smelted into it, is renewable.

A backdrop version of the Stone block can be obtained by placing the Stone itself anywhere on the crafting grid. Backdrop blocks have no collision and are slightly darker than the original block. These type of blocks also occupy the space for any other foreground block too, so it's only purpose is only for decorating empty (or air-filled) space.
Placing the Stone Backdrop block into the crafting grid will give the original Stone block back.
