A chest is a crafted block that can contain other blocks and items. A chest has 27 storage slots, each of which can contain 64 of the same block or item (except for slots containing items such as buckets or tools). A chest is a useful block to a new player running out of inventory space, and players that want to store and sort excess blocks and items. Destroying a chest will drop the blocks and items it contains on the block below where the chest was previously located. Naturally generated chests can be found in dungeons and ruins biomes.

Natural Generation

Chests naturally generate as a bonus chest and loot chests.

The bonus chest generates near the world spawnpoint if the option is toggled on. It contains the items listed below.

Loot chests generate in dungeons, skyholds, and ruins. The list of items they can contain is on the loot chests page.

Bonus Chest

Bonus chest is a regular chest that is spawned in the overworld containing a small set of randomized starting materials.

It can be enabled or disabled when creating a new world.

The chest generates based on the world's seed number. Up to 8 slots can be filled with starting materials, which is randomly chosen from the list below:

Usage

Chests can be moved using pistons and sticky pistons.

Container

A chest is a useful block to store and sort excess blocks and items, preventing loss of items on death as they will not be in the player's inventory.

The chest has 27 storage slots, each of which can contain a stack of the same block or item (this is limited by the certain item, e.g. dirt can stack up to 64 but a bucket only up to 1).
