Contents
Obtaining
Dirt can be broken by hand, but using a shovel will speed up the process.
Fishing
Dirt has a 0.36% chance of being caught while fishing with an unenchanted fishing rod. It is part of the junk category.
This makes dirt technically renewable.
Natural Generation
It is very easily found in forest biomes, plain biomes, mountain biomes, and mushroom biomes.
Dirt Based Blocks
Dirt is dropped by grass and mycelium if they are broken without a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. Farmland always drops dirt when broken, even with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch.
Farmland turns into dirt if it is not close enough to a water source.
Enderman
When an Enderman holding a dirt is killed, he always drops dirt.
Usage
When a block of dirt has no solid blocks at least up to 3 blocks above it, it will eventually switch to a grass block.
Farming
Trees, bamboo and sugarcane can all be grown on dirt. Itself and grass are the only block that passive mobs, such as pigs and cows, spawn on.
When tilled with a hoe, it switches to farmland, allowing crops such as wheat or pumpkins to be grown on it.
Crafting Ingredient
Dirt is required in the recipe for soul sand.
Dirt is also required in the recipe for coarse dirt.
Dirt can be used to make gold soil.
Dirt can be used to make dirt balls
