Grass is a very common resource in Mine Blocks.

Obtaining

Grass can be broken using any tool or by hand, but the shovel is the quickest. It can be obtained using a tool with silk touch; if broken with anything else, it will drop dirt instead.

Natural generation

Grass is located at the surface of the world and can grow on dirt if it has nothing above it. It is found naturally in forest biomes, plain biomes, and mountain biomes. Instead of grass being generated in mushroom biomes, mycelium is generated.

Endermen

The Enderman is able to pick up and place grass. If it is killed while holding one, it has a chance of dropping it.

Growth

A dirt block that has five blocks of air or other non solid blocks above it eventually turns into grass.

Death

Grass will die and change to dirt after a random time if directly covered by any opaque block less than five blocks above it.

Usage

Tilling grass with a hoe turns it into farmland.

Sheep can eat grass, turning it into dirt and regrowing their wool.

Bone meal

Using bone meal on grass can grow long grass, shrubs, flowers, sugarcane, saplings, and mushrooms.

Spawning

Grass is the only block passive mobs can spawn on. Leaving grass somewhere means that animals have a chance of spawning there, which can be useful when building animal farms.
