Redstone dust is a item gotten by mining redstone ore.

Obtaining

Redstone ore

When redstone ore is mined with an iron pickaxe or above, it drops 3-5 redstone dust.

Loot

Redstone dust is part of skyhold, dungeon and ruins chest loot tables.

Usage

Redstone dust can be placed on solid blocks. If there is no solid block beneath it, it will drop as an item.

Redstone dust can conduct redstone power, so when attached to a power source or powered block it will become "powered" and appear brighter. As a redstone wire becomes longer, the signal becomes weaker. After sixteen blocks, the signal will have ran out and the redstone dust there will no longer be powered. Two redstone torches can be used to repeat a signal. When a piece of redstone dust is powered, it can be used to turn on redstone related blocks such as wooden doors, redstone lamps, and pistons.

Tips

  • Redstone torches can be deactivated by redstone and lamps if placed really close.
  • Redstone can go downhill, but can not activate if placed at a diagonal if a block is in its path.
  • If lava touches redstone dust after it has been placed, the redstone dust will disappear.
