Gameplay
Hoes are used to till soil for harvest. To till, shift-click (or right click) a dirt or grass. The block will turn into farmland, which will be ready for planting seeds. Farmland will return back to dirt if not within a 3-block radius of water.
Obtaining
Unlike most tools the hoe cannot be found in bonus chest or loot chests, meaning the only way to get a hoe is through crafting or repairing.
Crafting
Hoes can be made using two sticks and two wooden planks, cobblestone, iron ingots, gold ingots or diamonds. Each makes their respective type. In order from worst to best, these are the tiers: Gold, Wooden, Stone, Iron, then Diamond.
Repairing
Two hoes of the same material can be combined in the crafting grid to combine their durability.
This can also be done through use of the anvil, to preserve enchantments.
Anvil - Repair & Rename
Usage
Harvesting
Hoes can be used to harvest fasters. Blocks such as the hay bale, leaves, and nether wart block.
Tilling
Hoes can be used for tilling dirt or grass into farmland.
Fuel
A wooden hoe can be used in a furnace as fuel. They can smelt one item.
Weapon
A hoe can be used as a weak weapon against mobs. This is almost completely useless, as hoes do the same damage as the player's bare fist, while using durability.
Enchanting
Hoes can have enchantments. So far the only one available is unbreaking, which increases the hoe's durability, and can be done to a max level of 4.
