A nether portal is a player-made structure that allows for travel to the Nether dimension. Another nether portal is generated at the spawn point in the nether.

Building a nether portal

The Nether portal is made of 6 portal stones in a "U" shape, with 4 blocks at the base and two on top, at each end (:..:). This leaves two blocks of air in the middle, which then need to be lit on fire with flint and steel to activate the portal, generating two portal blocks in their place. The portal stones can be removed later without destroying the portal blocks themselves.

Usage

Entering a Nether Portal allows the player to travel to the Nether, which is a necessary step to slay the Ender Dragon and complete the main objective of the game. Mobs and items are unable to travel through the portal, making the player the only one that can do so.

After entering a newly built Nether portal in the Overworld, another portal will be created in the Nether at the spawn point of the dimension. Portals entered in the Overworld or End will always lead to the spawn point of the Nether, even if the portal generated there is removed.

There can be many Nether portals in a single world, both in the Overworld and in the Nether, but if the player enters a portal in a specific set of coordinates in any dimension, they will not come out at the same coordinates in the other dimension, so linking portals to each other is impossible.

Nether portals created in the End can take the player to the Nether. However, entering the portal in the Nether, will always take the player to the Overworld.

Every 60 seconds or less, the portal will emit an ominous ambient noise, which can be used to add ambiance in buildings.

Falling blocks break when they fall in a Nether portal, as the portal blocks are not solid.

Obtaining

When it comes to the portal blocks themselves, they are unobtainable in survival mode, however, they can be obtained in creative mode with the pick block function.

The portal stones however, can be crafted with 1 obsidian block and 8 odd rocks.
