Sand is a common surface block. It is also one of two blocks (the other Gravel) that are affected by gravity.

Obtaining
Sand can be mined with anything, but using a shovel will speed up the process.
Fishing
When Fishing, there is a slight chance that you fish up sand, this makes it renewable.
Natural generation
It is generated in the desert biome and the water biome.
Usage
A unique quality to sand is that is falls if there is nothing below it. This makes it a very poor building material, as you cannot use it for a ceiling. Although, you can smelt it to create glass, which is good for building with.

Sand can be smelted to create glass.
