Gravel is a common block found underground in the Overworld. Like sand, it is affected by gravity.

Obtaining

Gravel can be mined with anything, but using a shovel will speed up the process. When mined, it has a 9/10 chance of dropping itself, and a 1/10 of dropping flint instead. However, the chance of it dropping flint can be increased using the fortune enchantment.

Natural generation

Gravel is fairly common. It can be found underground at any level in large veins.

Usage

If gravel has no block underneath it, it will fall down until it has a solid block to support it. If it falls on a non solid block like a torch, it will drop as an item.

Crafting ingredient

Gravel is required in the recipe for coarse dirt.

Bugs

  • 1.28: Sometimes, when you place gravel on top of a lily pad, the gravel block will duplicate.
  • 1.28: In creative mode, gravel can be spam-placed resulting in problems with it falling through blocks. TheTopazRobot (talk) 17:13, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Trivia

  • The player can place a block of gravel and mine it again, and again, until it drops flint.
