Lightning is an effect spawned naturally during thunderstorms. It causes a flash and a bolt of lightning. The bolt of lightning connects from the cloud layer to the surface of the world. This causes damage to nearby mobs.
If lighning strikes a pig, it will transform it into a zombie pigman, much like Minecraft.
Lightning can be spawned via the lightning command.
Alternatively, a thunderstorm can be triggered using the /weather set thunder command.
In 1.28, Lightning also seems to be able to pass through the roof of a shelter when it strikes.
Trivia
- Hostile mobs can spawn in thunderstorms even in the day.
- Ambient lightning can be seen while traveling in the nether.
- Since lightning can pass through the roof of a shelter in 1.28, it's best to stay underground, since hostile mobs can spawn during a thunderstorm, and lightning has a lower chance of hitting you.
- Strangely, the yellow bolt of lightning can sometimes be seen when underground, but rarely seems to hit.
