A pressure plate is used with or without redstone on doors and other stuff.
Crafting
Since there is the wooden pressure plate and the stone pressure plate you have to have either 2 stones or 2 wooden planks. Afterwards you put the 2 stones or 2 wooden planks in the 3x3 crafting bench side by side to each other.
