Type:Hostile
Drops:Nether brick

Bedrock

The Nethereye nethereye is a hostile mob that spawns in both the Overworld and the Nether.

This mob has 20 (♥ × 10) health and will drop Nether_brick Nether brick, Obsidian obsidian and Bedrock bedrock when killed.

Spawning

Nethereyes spawn both in the Overworld at night, and the Nether, in which they more commonly spawn.

Commands

A nethereye can be spawned in another way besides its respective spawn egg, with the command /summon nethereye you can spawn it.

In addition to that you can add data tags to customize the nethereye. examples:

  • /summon nethereye 1 ~ ~ {name:"Flaming eye", health:5, defaultDrops:false, drops:[{item:{id:"shades"}, quantity:1}]}
  • /summon nethereye 1 ~ ~ {name:"Party eye", health:20, defaultDrops:false, drops:[{item:{id:"party_hat", name:"Time to party!"}}]}

Drops

The nethereye drops Experience_orb_2 experience points when it dies.

Nethereyes drop 1-2 Nether_brick Nether brick, or 1-3 extra with Book Looting. They may also drop Obsidian obsidian and Bedrock bedrock as rare drops, and will have a larger chance of dropping them with Book Looting.

Behavior

Nethereyes are one of the four mobs (the others being the BlazeHead Blaze, GhastHead Ghast and EnderDragonHead Ender dragon) in the game with the capability to fly. When they are not attacking, they will float around randomly in any direction. For some reason, they seem to avoid water and stay away from it.

When they are flying upwards, they will be forced down by gravity, so they usually do not fly too high. If they are targeting another mob or the Player_head player, they will fly towards it quite quickly.

When attacking the player deals 2 (♥) damage per second.

Trivia

  • Nethereyes were not based off of Terraria's similar mob, the Demon Eye
  • Nethereyes are the only hostile mob that can spawn in more than one dimension.
  • Nethereyes are said to have broken out of the the Nether, and this is why they drop nether brick in particular.
  • Nethereyes used to have legs and walk around. They used to be called Nether Walkers, but their name was changed after their behavior was changed. Nethereyes are still named "Nether Walkers" in the game's code.
  • Prior to the 1.23 update, Nethereyes had a problem with movement, causing them to always go the wrong direction when attacking the player. This made finding and killing them harder, but avoiding them very easy.
