The fence is a decorative item in Mine Blocks added in the update 1.27. It comes in two types, wooden and nether brick. The player and most mobs cannot normally jump over it.

Obtaining

The fence can be mined with anything, but using an axe for the wooded one and a pickaxe for the nether brick one will speed up the process.

Crafting

Currently the only difference between the wooden and nether brick fences is that you mine one with an axe and the other with a pickaxe(respectively) because both of them are not flammable, but this is probably going to be fixed.

This recipe is easier because it only requires wood.

These are harder to craft, because it requires the player to either slay a lot of nethereyes or go to the Nether to get the nether bricks, but because nethereyes drop nether bricks, it is renewable.

Usage

Trapping Entities

Although it only appears to be one block tall, it is actually 2.5 blocks tall. This means that entities which cannot jump more than 2.5 blocks cannot get through it, making it useful for trapping mobs such as a cow, for milk, or a chicken, for egg. Players need the jump boost effect to jump over it. If a player or mob falls onto a fence from above, it will act as a normal block, only 1 block tall, until that entity falls of, making it useful for one way staircases. You can place blocks above fences.

When there is a solid block or another fence of the same type next to it, a fence will connect to that block, but its collision box will be the same. However, if it is connected to something on both sides or above it, it will lose all of its properties and will allow players and mobs to walk through and jump over it. This means that an entity is able to walk around inside a pen, because those fences are connected on both sides, but is not able to escape it, as the edges are only connected to the inside fences. Different types of fences do not connect, and you can still tie balloons to these fences.

Balloons

The fence can also be used to tie balloons, which stops them from floating away, and does not take up a space in the player's inventory.
