Charcoal is a renewable fuel that is used in a similar way to coal.

Blazes drop 0-1 pieces of charcoal upon death.

The flaming chicken drops 1-2 pieces of charcoal upon death.

Charcoal is made by smelting wood.

Charcoal can be used as a substitute for coal when crafting torches or smelting items.

A piece of charcoal can be combined with a stick to craft four torches. Either coal or charcoal can be used.

Charcoal has the same texture as coal
The only difference in functionality between coal and charcoal is that coal can be used to craft the coal block while charcoal cannot.
Charcoal requires one piece of fuel to be made, however it smelts 8 items, meaning it smelts more than it costs to make.
