The void below the Overworld

The void is the endless empty space outside of the generated world, separated by one to two layers of bedrock.

Effects

Upon reaching Y=-5, the void below the world causes the player to lose 4 (♥♥) health each half second in all dimensions. This damage can not be reduced by wearing armor, enchanting it with any kind of protection, nor by consuming a Resistance potion. Upon reaching Y=-40, the player dies immediatly even when on creative mode (although it does not happen when on spectator mode). This is the only environmental way to die in creative mode.

Dying or alterning dimensions will also remove any blocks placed in any of the voids.

Generation

Voids are generated as endless empty spaces on coordinates below Y=0 and X=0, and beyond Y=300 and X=1000 as well. All voids are generated in the same way, although the methods to get there varies on each dimension.

Overworld

The void in the overworld can be found below the bottom of the world, at coordinates below Y=0. There are voids on either sides of the world (before X=0 and after X=1000), however these horizontal voids do not cause damage to the player.

The bedrock walls on either side of the overworld are not endlessly tall. The top of the wall is at Y=300. Scaling this wall is the only way to access the void in survival without exploits.

Nether

The Nether has bedrock walls on each side of the world, making it virtually impossible to enter the void in this realm. The void behaves the same as in the overworld, only causing damage below the bottom of the world.

The End

There are no bedrock barriers between the landscape and the void of the End dimension, however, the effects of going below Y=-4 and Y=-40 remains the same as in the other dimensions.

Trivia

  • At extremely high velocities, a player can phase through the bedrock layers (and, more rarely, other blocks) at the bottom of the world. This was made more difficult when timestep collision was introduced in 1.25.
