Contents
Obtaining
Fishing
The name tag is part of the treasure category in the fishing loot table.
Natural Generation
Name tags can be found in 21.8% of loot chests in a stack of 1.
Usage
The name tag can be used to give names to mobs. This results in a name above the mob that can be seen when the player is looking at the mob. This also prevents the mob from despawning.
To name a mob, the name tag must first be renamed to the desired name using an anvil. This uses up one XP level, no matter how many name tags are being renamed at once. The name tag can then be used on a mob by shift clicking on it while holding the name tag. Mobs can be renamed if they have been renamed already, even if they are being renamed to the same name. This means that the player must be careful not to waster multiple name tags on the same mob if holding more than one.
Easter Eggs
Naming mobs certain names can unlock easter eggs and secret skins.
The rabbit can be named to "Moose" or "Toast" to give it one of two skins with which rabbits do not naturally spawn.
Naming a squid "Ghost" will change its texture as a tribute to Zanz's friend and fellow game developer Ghost ID.
