Name Tag is Used to name animals. You can obtain name tags in loot or with a Fishing Rod.
Using a Name Tag
To use a name tag you must first name it using an Anvil, then select the name tag in the items hotbar and shift-click on the animal you want to name.
Tip
You can name multiple name tags all at once for the price of one as long as you don't mind all your rabbits being called moose.
Careful of double clicking! The game will think you want to rename the mob and it will cost another name tag. Tags also are not dropped upon death.
A fishing rod can help you get the animals in their cages.
